Oral cancer is one of the most treatable of the major cancers when discovered and treated early. Yet oral cancer (the sixth most common cancer in the world) is the only major cancer whose incidence is rising when all other cancers are declining. Dental professionals are uniquely positioned to screen patients and detect oral cancer in its early, treatable stage. The identification of both oral cancer as well as precancerous lesions and how best to examine for and diagnosis them is presented. Although the gold standard for diagnosis is a biopsy and histopathology, new diagnostic adjunctive imaging technologies, as well as developing genetic and proteomic biomarkers hold promise for earlier detection.
This lecture provides a review and update of the topic and practical recommendations for the role of screening asymptomatic patients in the dental office; use of adjunctive technologies for disclosing and marking lesions; and recommendations for action when suspicious lesions are found. This lecture provides a brief review of the current state and research on early detection technologies.

Dr. Rhodus is a Diplomate American Board of Oral Medicine, is a Morse Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences in the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry . He is also an Adjunct Professor of Otolaryngology in the Medical School and an Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health. He is a Diplomate, examiner, and past President of the American Board of Oral Medicine, He is also past President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He is an inductee in the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center Academy of Excellence and the Academy of Distinguished Teachers and the University of Minnesota Scholar’s Walk of Fame. He is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists and of the American College of Dentists and a Fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is an Attending member of the Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center and the Hospital Staff of the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics, a consultant to the US Navy Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center.
