Safety training linking policy to practice: Recommended for
Infection Control Coordinators (ICC) and the whole safety team.
Get an overview of the physical, chemical, and infectious disease risks and updated safety protocols that dental offices must have in place. Review required written policies and learn what is needed to ensure safe dental visits for all patients and dental workers. Standard and transmission-based precautions are explained and indoor air safety options are explored. This course meets Infection Control & OSHA CE requirements.
Outcomes – Upon completion, the participant shall be able to:
- Recognize and manage bloodborne, contact, droplet, and airborne diseases.
- Find resources to update the office safety program for current dental office risks.

Within the context of the physical, chemical, and infectious disease risks and updated safety protocols, apply Standard and Transmission-based Precautions. Safety tips are categorized by effectiveness and include safe practices, environmental asepsis, hand hygiene, instrument sterilization, waterline management, and PPE. This course meets Infection Control & OSHA CE requirements.
Outcomes – Upon completion, the participant shall be able to:
- Recognize and manage bloodborne, contact, droplet, and airborne diseases.
- Identify best practices for providing safe dental care.
Topics to be Covered:
- Safety strategies.
- Physical safety & hazard communications.
- Sharps & waste safety.
- Instrument sterilization.
- Standard vs. Transmission-based precautions.
- Hierarchy of safety efforts: most to least effective practices.
- Screening patients.
- Building & clinic aerosol control: Indoor air quality.
- Hand hygiene.
- Environmental asepsis and dental waterlines.
- PPE criteria, use, and limitations.
- Reflection on improving dental safety preparedness.
- Resources: CDC, WHO, ADA, OSAP, AGD, FDA, OSHA.

Ms. Dewhirst graduated from the University of Southern California, practiced dental hygiene for 20 years, is an adjunct dental hygiene faculty at West Coast University, and a member of Sigma Phi Alpha. Ms. Dewhirst is consistently listed as one of the nation’s “Leaders in CE.” She presents over 100 seminars a year, is featured at major U.S. and Canadian Dental Conferences, and is a member of the California Dental Association Speakers Bureau. She is Editor-in-Chief of OSAP’s Infection Control In Practice, has many articles published in dental peer-reviewed journals, and has contributed to dental textbooks and guidance documents.
